Unlike casement windows that close with a compression seal, sliding windows rely on brush seals, interlock gaskets, and track drainage to stop air and water. That makes seal performance the single most important specification to verify on an aluminum glass sliding window, because a poor seal means drafts, dust, water ingress, and noise intrusion that no amount of double glazing can fix.
The good news: modern Chinese manufacturing has solved this through three engineering approaches — multi-track designs, pressure-equalized drainage, and engineered brush seal systems. The challenge is that these improvements live behind a spec sheet of performance classes, and buyers who don't read them end up with windows that look identical but perform completely differently.

The classes are measured on the complete window — frame, sash, seals, and hardware together — per EN 12207 (air), EN 12208 (water), and EN 12210 (wind). This is critical: a window with good glass but poor seals will fail the air permeability test even if the glass is triple-glazed. And a window that passes the wind load test but fails watertightness will leak during a storm. All three classes must match your site conditions.

Because sliding windows close by sliding, not by compressing. A casement window presses a gasket into the frame with mechanical force; a sliding window relies on brush seals and interlock gaskets that work by proximity rather than compression. The engineering challenge is making those proximity seals tight enough to stop air and water without making the window hard to slide. Modern multi-track and pressure-equalized designs have largely solved this, but only in the Class 3+ configurations.
Not recommended. Coastal sites expose windows to salt spray, wind-driven rain, and sustained high wind loads. Class 2 (air permeability) with Class 3A-4A (watertightness) will show drafts and water ingress within 1-2 seasons. For coastal projects, specify Class 3 minimum with Class 6A+ watertightness, and ensure the seals are EPDM rather than PVC.
Request the EN 12207, EN 12208, and EN 12210 test reports from the manufacturer. The reports should show the tested specimen configuration (sash size, glazing, seal type) — not a generic certificate. If the manufacturer cannot produce test reports, the window has not been tested, and the "performance class" claim is marketing, not measurement.
The thermal break itself doesn't change the seal class — it changes the U-value of the frame. However, premium thermal break profiles are often paired with better seal systems because both are part of a high-performance window package. If you need both thermal performance (Uw ≤ 1.8) and seal performance (Class 3+), specify both explicitly rather than assuming one implies the other.
